About Kanpur : Kanpur is the biggest city of the state and is main centre of commercial and industrial activities. Formerly known as Manchester of the country is now also called the commercial capital of the state.
It is situated on the most important national highways no. 2 & 25 and state highway. It is also situated on the main Delhi-Howrah railway trunk line. It is situated on bank of holy river Ganga and is about 126 meters above the sea level. Presently there is no civilian air-service available for the city but a 9,000 feets air strip is available at civilian air terminal Chakeri (Ahirwan). The nearest civilian air port Amausi (Lucknow) is 70Km. away from Kanpur.
Tourism :
Kanpur is an important historical town. This is the birth place of Ganesh Shankar Vidhyarthi & the poet of "Jhanda Uncha Rahe hamara" Sh. Shyam Lal Gupta "Parshad".
A zoo of international standard is also situated in Kanpur. The parts of ancient structure & monuments of the time of King Yayati can be seen in Jajmau.
There is 350 years old only manuscript of Gurugranth Sahib and certified with the signature of Bhai Banno Sahib is also available in "Gurudwara Banno Sahib". A museum can also be seen in Phool Baugh.

BITHOOR : This holy and historical place is situated 21 kms. away from Kanpur on the bank of holy river Ganga. Besides Kashi, the holy place Bithoor is decorated with maximum nos. of beautiful ghats. The Bithoor is also known as "Brahmvart" (The creation place of Manu and Satrupa). It is also believed that Maharshi Balmiki has created the first Mahagrantha of Hindu "Ramayana" here & Lav & Kush was born & brought up in his Aashram. Ramel is the place where Avadh Naresh Shri Ram met with Lav & Kush after Ashwamegha Yagya.
Maharani Laxmi bai passed her childhood here and this is the work place of freedom fighters Tatya Tope, Azimullah Khan, Mainavati & Nanarao Peshwa.
The temples of Gupta period can also be seen 32 kms away from Kanpur.
Kannauj, the city of perfumes is also situated on G.T. road 80 kms. away from Kanpur. The city was very famous during the period of Harshavardhan.
Industry :
Kanpur is one of the biggest producer of Textile and Leather products and they are exported in bulk. About 50 Tons of air cargo is generated for leather products only and this is sent through surface transport to New Delhi and from New Delhi it is sent to outside India through air cargo.
Apart from leather and textile industry, the fertilizer, chemicals, two wheelers, soaps, Pan Masala, hosiery and engineering indusries are also operating in the city.
The Stock yard of H.A.L. and SAIL are also located in the city. The highest number of ordnance factories are situated in the city.
Gas Authority of India , NTPC and perfume indusries of Kannauj are also near to Kanpur. STP (Software Technology Park) is also functioning in Kanpur. The Directorate of Industries and Directorate of Handlooms are also situated in the city.

Cricket is most popular sport in Kanpur. Green Park Stadium is a 45,000 capacity floodlit multi-purpose stadium located in Kanpur, and the home ground of the Uttar Pradesh cricket team. However, of late due to political and financial reasons, the ground has been rarely utilized. It is the only international cricket stadium in Uttar Pradesh that has hosted many international cricket matches of both Test and One Day format.
Football is also a popular sport in the city and many schools and colleges organise Football Tournaments. Other sports include basketball, hockey, athletics, volleyball etc. The most popular sports in the rural areas near the city are Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Gilli Danda, Akhada wrestling, etc.
